Center for Environment Partners with SIMPLE LIVING TV Series (Fall 2004)
Salisbury, N.C.—The Catawba College Center for the Environment has entered a partnership with the SIMPLE LIVING WITH WANDA URBANSKA TV Series that will bolster the work of both.
“The Center and the TV series have comparable missions, “says Dr. John Wear, Center for the Environment director. “Our mission is to educate our students and the public about environmental stewardship and sustainability. We involve our students, faculty and staff in activities and programs that promote sustainable solutions in the local community, the state and the region.”
Similarly, SIMPLE LIVING WITH WANDA URBANSKA focuses on environmental stewardship, thoughtful consumption, community involvement and financial responsibility. “Our goals dovetail very well.”
Urbanska agrees. “It’s a natural fit,” she says, “because Catawba is an educational institution, and we at the SIMPLE LIVING WITH WANDA URBANSKA Television Series are also seeking to educate the public. Many of the issues we are tackling in Simple Living segue beautifully with the work that Dr. Wear and others at the center are doing to raise awareness about the environment.”
The Catawba Center for the Environment has become increasingly involved in the area in environmental matters and often lends its leadership and its expertise on issues ranging from air and water quality to land preservation and sustainable development. Its current emphasis, the Clean Air Initiative, focuses on mitigating ground-level ozone in the region.
The building that houses the Center also epitomizes the Center’s mission and servers as a model for green building practices. The structure has been called “a three-dimensional incarnation of the Center’s sustainable curriculum – a dynamic teaching tool as well as an environmentally sound project.”
Located on the edge of the college’s 189-acre ecological preserve, it merges seamlessly with the natural environment. Everything about the facility – from the site design to the environmentally friendly building materials, from energy and water conservation issues to recycling and waste management – is grounded in principles of sustainability.
The Catawba Environmental Science and Studies Program offers opportunities for students to get involved in regional and state environmental issues as well as expeditions to study the ecology and environmental problems associated with some of the world’s endangered ecosystems.
