Henry started a new school – Jones Elementary – almost exactly a month ago today. Frank drove Henry on the first day of school, and our eight-year-old had the predictable first-day jitters every third grader probably experiences. He saw a sign outside the school grounds reading: “School of Distinction” and anxiously commented to Frank, “I hope it won’t be a school of extinction for me.” By the end of the day, Henry was back to his usual, self-confident, even cocky, self. When asked how he liked it, Henry gave the experience and his attractive new teacher – Mrs. Jamie Smith—a thumbs-up. “Excellent” was his one-word retort. It came as no surprise, then, when Henry brought home the superintendent’s letter the other day reporting that Jamie Smith had been named “Teacher of the Year” for the Mount Airy City Schools this year. How fortunate for Henry to be in her classroom.
