Yesterday, Henry and I participated in one of Mount Airy’s most celebrated annual rituals: the tour of homes, sponsored by the Mount Airy Restoration Foundation: 10 homes and one church, dressed to the nines for Christmas. It’s the Restoration Foundation’s annual fundraiser, and a wonderful community builder. On Saturday and Sunday afternoons, members of the community take their tickets and go through homes. You bump into people you haven’t seen for years and look with amazement at creative Christmas decorations. Henry and I were able to take in two homes Sunday afternoon: the home of Robin and J.R. Hester on West Pine Street, which has been lovingly restored and will soon become a bed and breakfast, and the home of Susan and Danny Dollyhigh on Cherry Street, which was originally built by the owner of the Mount Airy Granite Quarry. After I dropped Henry off at a birthday party, I visited the great lady of Mount Airy: the William Alfred Moore House, which sits on 4.1 acres in downtown Mount Airy. What a crown jewel it is; how lucky we are to have that building still standing.
