Wanda's Diary Entries

I spent a couple of days in Washington D.C., Monday and Tuesday of this week. It was a wonderful experience. I met with my gracious and receptive Congressional representatives on Capitol Hill, had lunch with a potential sponsor for the program, and dined with and spoke to members of a remarkable class at Virginia Tech-Alexandria campus on Monday night (more later on this). But what I want to express today is what a privilege it is to use the public transit system in Washington DC—the Metro. On Tuesday, I was able to have lunch in Bethesda, Maryland, which ended after 1 p.m., and then jump onto the Metro and get to the airport easily to make a 3:10 p.m. plane. How marvelous not to have to worry about traffic and the air pressure in my tires. And the bonus is the wonderful people you can meet when on a subway, bus or train. I had the great good fortune to run into three physicians who were headed to the airport from medical meetings in D.C. They were all headed to New York City and all three were talking excitedly about the election on Tuesday: how they felt that Mayor Michael Bloomberg would easily be re-elected, and some of the sensitive issues with which the medical community in New York was dealing. They asked me about the governor’s race in Virginia and were curious to learn about the SIMPLE LIVING series. Meeting expressive and curious new people is to me always a thrill.
