Last Friday some of my female friends and I got together at the Robert Smith House for what we like to call a “power lunch.” Ann Vaughn buys sub sandwiches, and we all get around and gab about various developments in town, activities and our vision for the community. I love this group of ladies!
When I mentioned to the group that my demographer friend from Chicago was sending a researcher from Austin, TX to Surry County to study how it works, Twyla Sickmiller, co-owner with her husband Roger, of the Maxwell House Bed and Breakfast on Main Street in town, immediately and without hesitation, offered to comp her a room. When I emailed Dr. Kenneth Johnson in Chicago that his researcher’s accommodations were already taken care of, he was more than delighted—moved by the efficiency and lovingkindness of a stellar small town! We can all learn a lesson from such overwhelming gestures of generosity.
