Wanda's Diary Entries

My computer crashed on Monday, right as I was finishing up an article on deadline for a magazine in New York. It crashed right at 12 noon, so I’d checked my morning emails, but I felt pretty awkward calling my new editor for this first-time article telling her that my computer had crashed. It sounded like the old the “dog ate my homework” line. Fortunately, though, here at the Simple Living office, our computers are linked, so I was able to go to Bob Wells’ computer and put the final touches on my piece and send it off to my editor. The elation of completing my piece outweighed the disappointment—or devastation—I should say of losing my email backlog. In fact, Monday’s crash wiped out all my email since August 2004. Even the computer technician seemed surprised that I remained in good spirits considering how much work there is to done. I now have to reenter all the names on my address book, including such entries as people on the Simple Living National Advisory board list. Somehow it doesn’t surprise me as I’ve never quite trusted technology. Even though I hate to waste paper, I often print out important emails and put them in old-fashioned file folders (made by Smead Manufacturing, of course). And for every one of those now, I am glad!
