At the “purple heart” ceremony last Saturday, Frank and I sat beside our good friend Emmett Forrest. Emmett is a contemporary of Andy Griffith and many others here Mount Airy. An athlete in high school and college, Emmett is a handsome gentleman who lost his lovely wife, Bobbi, this past year but has managed to hold his head high and stay active in community events. As we sat there hearing the accolades to the late Capt. James Jones, he leaned over to the clover at his feet, plucked up a four-leaf clover and presented it to me. “I have spotted four-leaf clovers all my life,” he said. “Never do I find one when I’m looking for one. But if one is there, it pops out at me.” Frank and I were both amazed. Neither of us has ever found one our entire lives. This is an omen of good luck, Emmett said. It brought a smile to his face, and mine, wondering what form that good luck would take.
