Wanda's Diary Entries

I am writing an article this weekend on a very special love story, the story of love defered for almost 20 years and finally realized. It is the story of Holly Allen Jennings (now Stevens) and her husband of over a year Bill Stevens. They live near Greensboro, North Carolina, but I’ve known them both for more than 20 years. I first met Holly through Frank’s mother Miriam when I was interviewing people in their 20s in the 1980s. Miriam put me in touch with Holly, who was then attending Friends Meeting in Winston-Salem. At that time Holly was working in pr at Wachovia Bank. She later married Jeff Jennings and moved to Minneapolis, where I visited her. Rarely have a I met a more generous, creative person. And Bill is equally amazing. He was an organizer for civil rights when a senior at Wake Forest College back in 1960 and I learned in interviewing him that Winston Salem was the first city in the South to voluntarily desegregate lunch counters. They are an inspiration to be around, and can teach us all about the selflessness of true love. More later.
