We’re getting very close to completing shooting for the series. A week ago today, we shot at Pilot Mountain just 10 miles south of Mount Airy. It’s a majestic landmark off U.S. 52 that you can’t miss when you drive north from Winston-Salem. Native Americans viewed it as a kind of “pilot” or “guide” on their travels, and later the settlers viewed it the same way. For those of us who live in the area, it’s a point of geologic pride, and it’s an iconic logo on many commercial and nonprofit ventures. We shot at Pilot Mountain that Friday, under the ideal mix of light and temperature, taking advantage of the lush overlooks and lovely early autumn foliage. It was so beautiful that I loaded Henry up in my Subaru the very next day and drove over to the park for a hike. The park on Saturday was pretty packed with hikers and picnickers and people with young children and dogs, and everyone was there for the same reason I was—to overcome nature-deficit disorder.” And I can assure you after seeing all the happy, engaged faces out that sunny day, we all succeeded!
