Melvin N. Johnson, D.B.A.

Dr. Melvin N. Johnson is the president of Tennessee State University. He received his B.S. and M.A. in economics at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and Ball State University, respectively. He earned his M.B.A. and D.B.A. in Business Economics and Public Policy at Indiana University. Johnson has furthered his education with classes at the Harvard Institute for Higher Education and the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
His fellowships include the NAFEO Kellogg Leadership Fellow (2003-04), Senior Fellow of Future Focus 2020, the Babcock Graduate School of Management, Wake Forest University (2003-05), and the Millennium Leadership Institute Protégé (AASCU), Washington (2001). He has worked on Executive Leadership Development projects throughout the Piedmont Triad area of North Carolina.
Before his presidency at Tennessee State, he served as the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (2000-present), Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, (1998-2000) at Winston-Salem State University.
In addition to his professional work, he enjoys sailing, computers, and reading.
